Visual Air are an accredited Aerial Photography company based in East Sussex that can cover any areas in the United Kingdom. Any pilots with Visual Air are Civil Air Authority (CAA) accredited and also have the BNUC-S / RPQ-S UAS Certificate and hold full liability insurance.

Visual Air was started by Sam Moore who is a professional photographer that is always looking for new ways to expand his skill set.  With recent technology advancements in the UAV/Drone sector, and the ability to capture stunning photos and video from totally unique vantage points, this can be breathtaking.

Sam is hugely passionate about photography and film, and being able to get the shot to the best of his ability is always important with every job undertaken. Sam treats every job like his own personal project.

For aerial filming the Dji Inspire is used with an option of 2 different camera setups. This UAV has great mobility and outstanding flight performance, also being easy to setup and get in the air, this helps to bring down the costs of Aerial photography yet still being able to resolve professional results. Portability is important which is why the inspire is used, plus also it is under 7kg making working in congested areas easier to get permissions for. It is also the only system under 7kg that can shoot in a lossless CinemaDNG RAW format. Other features such as dual operator ability to allow the camera gimbal to be controlled completely separate from the main controller which allows for more dynamic shots.

Again working with portability in mind yet still resolving professional results, for ground work the Sony A7R Mk2 is used and a DJI OSMO (using the X5r) and a Timelapse system using various sliders and dollys.

Permissions for Night Operations

Visual Air can now offer full night operations. Drone operators are only allowed to use a drone up to 30mins before sunrise, and 30mins after sunset. With recent permissions in place Visual Air are able to fly drones any time of the night, providing the take off and landing area is well lit, and a day time flight assessment has been taken into account.

Aerial Photography & Filming

2 different cameras can be used on the Inspire, the x3 and x5r.

The x3 is a smaller camera that allows for a longer flight time and shoots in 4k at either 24, 25, 30fps or 1080p up to 60fps. This also allows about 15mins of flight time with each battery. Images can also be shot at 12mp.

The x5r is a pro level micro four thirds camera that can shoot in lossless CineDNG RAW at 4k and use various lenses. At present we use the..

  • Olympus M.Zuiko 12mm f2.0
  • Olympus M.Zuiko 45mm f1.8
  • Olympus 14-42mm
  • Samyang 7.5mm F1.8 (Fisheye)

The X5r shoots in

  • 4K UHD: 4096×2160 (24/25p); 3840×2160 (25/30p);
  • FHD: 1920×1080 (24/25/30/48/50/60p)

The X5r can shoot in CinemaDNG RAW at an average of 1.7Gpbs. Please note that around 30mins of 4K footage will use up around 500gb of HDD space, but the main reason is that this can allow editors to grade the edit in with high end systems like RED or ARRI.

X5r also records direct to an SD card in a standard mp4 format.

Image stills are shot in RAW / JPEG at 16mp – 4608×3456

Each flight last about 10-12mins.

The X5r also has the option of a very flat D-Log colour space which picks up alot more dynamic range making it more suitable for heavy grading in post production.

Ground Photography & Filming

For Ground photography and filming the Sony A7R2 is used. The Sony A7R2 shoots in..

  • XAVC S 4K: 3840 x 2160 (25p/100Mbps, 25p/60Mbps)
  • XAVC S HD: 1920 x 1080 (50p/50Mbps, 25p/50Mbps), 1280 x 720 (100p/50Mbps)
  • Image stils are RAW / JPEG 42mp – 7952px x 5304px

Whether on ground or air, stunning timelapses can be created and with using various sliders and dollys, much more dynamic shots can be captured.

Timelapse clips can be produced at 4K and even though overskill right now, it is possible to create 8K footage.
